Passionate About Mental Wellness and Performance Excellence

Dr. Daniel Zimet is a Columbia, MD based Clinical Psychologist, Sport Psychologist, and executive consultant since 2002. His specializations include individual and relationship counseling, and mental wellness and performance excellence in sports and organizations.

Education

I received my Bachelor of Science from Towson University (1992) in Psychology and Sociology, a Master Degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University (1994), and my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University (2002).

 

Work experience

My early career in mental health focused on at-risk youth and families in multiple settings, including in-community, inpatient, residential, Job Corps, employee assistance (EAP), and the Johns Hopkins University Counseling Center. I have been in Private Practice in Columbia, Maryland since 2005.

 

Athletic experience

Sport has always been an integral part of my life. In my youth I played everything, particularly travel soccer and skateboarding. I was a ski instructor during graduate school. Throughout, my sport of choice has been handball (think racquetball but with your hands, not the Olympic version).

 

Competitive Handball results

  • Nearly 30-years at the Open/Pro level of competition

  • 40 National Master titles (as of Sept, 2024)

  • Matches televised (as an athlete) on ESPN3 on seven occasions

  • 2018 SRR48 Pro Handball, end of season ranking: 3rd 

  • 2016 SRR48 Pro Handball, end of season ranking: 4th

  • Only Handball Player to win 6-straight National Masters titles in the same age group (Singles 3-wall, 2010-1016)

  • Only player to make 12 consecutive singles appearances in the finals of National Masters play (2005-2016)

  • With my partner, the only player to make 14 consecutive doubles appearances in the finals of National Masters play 2005-2018)

  • Youngest player to win 20+ National Masters titles

  • Youngest player to win 30+ National Masters titles

  • Youngest player to win 40+ National Masters titles

  • Inducted Grand Master, 2011 United States Handball Association (USHA)

  • Continues to win Open level tournaments in singles and doubles regionally.

  • Winningest regional player for the past twenty-five years

 

Contributions to Handball

  • Certified Level-5 referee in Handball; 

  • Certified USHA Instructor in Handball; 

  • 10 years as the Maryland Handball Commissioner (2003-2013) 

  • Published author 17 times in Handball Magazine and the WPH 

  • Co-broadcaster for USHA and WPH professional matches.

Athlete Transition Study

  • Coordinator, chief writer and developer, and lead investigator of a team studying the circumstances, adaptation, resource utilization, and quality of elite athlete’s transition to retirement. With 500+ participants, the IRB-approved Athlete Transition Study provides research, recommendations, and program support.
